Richard Hooker’s thought is rich. He is an especially eclectic thinker, drawing on both the humanist and the scholastic traditions, on patristics and on scripture, on Plato and on Aristotle. His theological method is rooted in both the Reformation and the Medieval church. It is both generous and pastoral. Hooker still has much to say and much to teach us. His nuanced theological method can teach us to approach the issues facing the modern church with a similar nuance, sophistication, thoughtfulness, and most importantly, generosity. This course seeks to familiarize students with a representative body of the work of Richard Hooker, a key figure of the sixteenth-century English church, and situate Hooker in his historical and theological context.
