Don't read these prayers if you are looking for a cozy “me and Jesus” relationship. You won't find it here. What you will find is a faith found in action for the good of all: “With faith comes change.”
(The Rev. Bob Root, retired United Church Minister)

Sparks’ prayers are thought-provoking and insightful, useful to share in worship just as they are written but also great for inspiring worship-leaders and preachers in their own preparations for worship.
(Rev. Susan Lukey,  Editor, Gathering Worship Resource and GatheringWorship.ca)

As the Lectionary moves into weekly readings from Mark’s Gospel, we’re pleased to launch this compelling new collection of prayers that grow out of the very stories churches will be reading throughout the next year.

Called to Act, a collection of responsive prayers inspired by reflections on Mark’s gospel, calls us to be bold disciples and to be daring in our quest for justice. In these prayers, readers will find echoes of thanks and hope that will speak to their own joys and challenges; worship leaders will find help and inspiration as they prepare for worship. A study guide is included to prompt discussion and deepen exploration of Mark’s gospel, section by section, chapter by chapter.

In this Book Launch, Rev. Stephen Fetter (manager of United in Learning) interviews the author Rev. David Sparks. They’ll cover topics like:

  • Why Mark’s Gospel? What about this gospel speaks to our time and calls us to prayer and action?
  • What is prayer for? What difference does it make to us? To God?
  • What makes a prayer feel relevant? Compelling? Inspiring?
  • How are public prayers similar to, and different from, prayers for personal devotion?
  • How can this book be a resource to worship leaders, committee volunteers, and people in the pew?
