Church buildings are more than bricks and
mortar, they are also places of worship, community, and memory. How we use or
transform these spaces reflects our deepest beliefs, and property
decision-making can be an explicitly faith-based process.
Next Session: Preventative Property Maintenance Session -
Date: Wednesday, November
12, 2025 7 pm ET
We've all heard about a church (maybe yours) faced with
unexpected repairs, both large and small – a running toilet, a leaking roof, a
boiler on the fritz on the coldest day of the year, all requiring immediate
attention, at a cost that may run into thousands of dollars.
Does your community of faith have a plan to address property
repair and maintenance issues? Do you know when your boiler or roof was last
replaced, and its anticipated lifespan? What deferred maintenance items should
be included in your annual budget?
Join David Lewis, former Director of Property Management Services
at Toronto United Church Council (TUCC) as we explore how to implement a plan
for managing the repairs and maintenance of your building property, including
the use of contingency funds, long range financial forecasting, operational and
capital budgeting, how to baseline and assess your property's present
condition, documenting, recording and updating all aspects of building
operations, including user manuals, and maintenance task worksheets.
Prior to his
retirement in early 2025, David was the primary contact for the extensive
property management functions of TUCC including the various properties being
managed by TUCC, in partnership with Regional Councils in south central Ontario
and Kindred Works. At one point, he was responsible for the day-to-day management
of more than 35 properties. David joined TUCC in 2022 after time at Beach
United Church managing their building, administration, finances and rentals.
Previously he was a Director at CPA Ontario, managing multiple properties, and
a large facilities management staff.
