Join with other worship, bible study, and small group study leaders to learn in community about wrestling with and reading scripture in ways that avoid anti-Jewish and antisemitic interpretations. We will look at upcoming lectionary passages for Lent, Holy Week, and Easter as well as hymns from Voices United, More Voices, and the new hymn resource, Then Let Us Sing! to help us be better prepared to recognize and address anti-Jewish and antisemitic interpretations of scripture and hymns. This course is open to anyone in the United Church who is interested in deepening their understanding around addressing antisemitism in our own theologies, liturgies, and interpretations of scripture.
We ask that people make a commitment to 3 sessions, held in mid-January, early March, and early May, as we hope to create a learning community together. Our approach will be conversational, with some reading/videos ahead of each session, and opportunity to learn from and with one another. We will have guest resource people join, who will offer some prompts for our discussion and learning at each session. There will be opportunity in between each session for you to apply what we’ve been learning together. This series will help you prepare particularly for Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. It will also give you an opportunity to engage more fully with our new hymn resource,
Then Let Us Sing!, and to provide feedback to an international group in the process of creating alternative lectionary readings,
