This course is specifically designed to help you understand the history of Indigenous-settler relations in Canada and reflect on the significance of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. It is designed for worship leaders and lay Christians who want to understand the background to this history. Throughout the course, you will learn about the early history of Indigenous-settler relations, the history of residential schools, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s findings, and how the mainline churches have responded and continue to respond.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to
Outline the key developments in the history of Indigenous-settler relations in Canada and with respect to residential schools in particular
Articulate how the churches’ attitudes to Indigenous peoples and residential schools have changed over the last century, and the factors that brought these changes about
Reflect on the devastating long-term impacts on Indigenous communities and how the churches can continue to apply the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action
What to Expect:
- There are 7 modules that make up this workshop. Each module will take approximately 30-60 minutes to complete. Module topics include:
- Introduction to Indigenous History
- Indigenous and Settler relations
- Residential Schools
- The Background to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Doctrine of Discovery
- The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Findings
- The Churches Apologize
- The Churches and Truth and Reconciliation Moving Forward
- Each module includes opportunities for you to reflect on new learning and/or practice what you've learned in short ungraded practice activities.
- There are additional activitie,s including quizzes, practice exercises and questions for reflection and discussion
- Some modules also include discussion boards, where you can interact with others going through this program.
